Emotional Literacy

Emotional literacy is the ability to understand and express your feelings, as well as the ability to manage your emotions and those of others. It involves:

  • Self-awareness: Recognising your feelings and knowing how to manage them

  • Empathy: Being able to sense and understand the feelings of others.

  • Emotional vocabulary: Being able to find the words to name your feelings.

  • Emotional interactivity: Being able to engage in social interactions

Emotional literacy is crucial for children as it helps them develop social skills, establish positive relationships, and reduce bullying. Research indicates that children's social and emotional competence can significantly influence their future relationships and mental health.

Emotional literacy can be promoted in schools, social groups, at home, therapy settings, and in everyday life. Children learn emotional literacy by watching and interacting with adults and children and receiving guidance.
