About Sam - Background & Qualifications
Sam is a highly skilled and experienced master’s-level art psychotherapist with an extensive teaching and education consultancy background. Her primary expertise lies in supporting children, adolescents, and families , although she works effectively with individuals of all ages. Having grown up in a diverse, multicultural environment and navigating multiple international relocations and school transitions during her formative years, Sam developed a profound understanding of the challenges of change and adaptation. These experiences have shaped her deep empathy, cultural sensitivity, and commitment to providing a safe, supportive therapeutic space where clients feel understood and empowered to navigate their unique journeys.
Sam earned her high school diploma from The American School of Rio de Janeiro, then embarked on her Bachelor of Fine Arts studies in San Francisco. She completed her BFA (Hons) at Coventry University, UK, before training as an Art and Special Education teacher. Sam began her teaching career at a Coventry school that specialised in supporting boys with emotional and behavioural needs, where she coordinated and delivered art, literacy and assessment programmes. She then progressed to a senior teaching role within Pupil Referral Units before becoming a Specialist Teacher for the Warwickshire Education Authority.
Motivated by a deep passion for providing holistic therapeutic support to young people with acute needs, Sam pursued a master’s in Art Psychotherapy and gained invaluable experience working at CAMHS. After completing her training, she established and led the Art Psychotherapy service for the Warwickshire Youth Justice Department. She tailored her work to address the unique strengths and challenges faced by young offenders and children in care while involving their families and case workers in the therapeutic process.
Sam returned to Australia in 2015, spending several years in the remote Aboriginal community of Yuendumu, Northern Territory. There, she supported the artists at Warlukurlangu Art Centre and worked alongside the centre’s assistant manager with the dog rescue programme, Aussie Desert Dogs. Upon relocating to the Mornington Peninsula, Sam joined Barefoot Therapists, where she introduced art psychotherapy as a key component of their multidisciplinary services. Here, she continues to employ neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed, client-centred Art Psychotherapy.
In addition to her professional practice, Sam continues to nurture her passion for photography and art. She recognises creativity and self-expression as vital tools for reflection, connection, and growth.
